Holding Government Accountable

Prior to the internet and the spread of social media it was difficult to monitor and hold Government accountable.

As a lawyer, I regularly act for and against Government and am appalled in many instances at the lack of service delivery, poor discipline and lack of will in getting things done.

The idea I have is simply to identify in each Province or Region the ten worst areas of service delivery e.g. the ten worst schools, the ten worst police stations, the ten worst clinics etc.

These are then listed on a website with photos e.g. of a school that has no windows, no furniture etc. and the Government is placed under pressure by all of us in that we will monitor that school once a week and if there is no change, that is where the pressure comes for the Government to make things happen, discipline those involved if things aren’t being done or ultimately for us as South Africans to vote out those politicians.

In essence this is the ultimate and accountable Government.

Once those ten schools, for example, are at an acceptable level, we then move on to the next ten ones. This will also allow communities to come forward and ask to be placed on the “top ten list” and demonstrate the problems that they have allowing all of us to keep pressure on those officials.
